Feronia Funrunium

Last year several of us ran the Feronia Funrunium and had a blast! This is a 7k, 13k or 24k trail run through the woods in northern MD, near the PA and DE borders. Some folks wear regular running gear, others wear togas and the
really serious runners wear footed penguin pajamas! This year's race is on Sat. Nov 6 and there will be a bunch of us carpooling up for the run. Who's in for togas, trails and fun?!? Email Paula or leave a comment here.

For more info, the race website is here

Haile Gebrselassie to Speak at GGRF Fundraiser

Haile Gebrselassie, arguably the greatest living distance runner in history, has graciously agreed to be our featured speaker at a fundraiser for the Girls Gotta Run Foundation on Monday, November 8, 2010. The event, which is co-sponsored and hosted by the Chevy Chase Running Company, will take place at the Chevy Chase Running Company store at 4461 Willard Avenue, Chevy Chase, Maryland, from 7 to 9 p.m.

Mr. Gebrselassie, who will be competing in the New York Marathon on Sunday, November 7, won the Berlin Marathon in September 2008 at the age of 35, with a world record time of 2:03:59, breaking his own world record by 27 seconds. On Monday night, he will speak about his life and career and answer questions from the audience.

Tickets will be $25.00 and sold only at the door, starting at 6 p.m. All proceeds will benefit GGRF. A portion of the funds will be set aside by GGRF to subsidize scholarships for promising but impoverished Ethiopian running girls to attend training at the Yaya Africa Athletics Village, an athletic center in Sululta, Ethiopia, which is presently under construction and in which Mr.Gebrselassie is a partner. Proceeds from the sale of autographed copies of a limited number of posters of Mr. Gebrselassie will also be donated to GGRF. Light refreshments will be served. We look forward to seeing you there! Please let me know if you have any questions.

Registration for Boston Opens Today

Just a reminder for the Boston Qualifiers that registration for the 2011 Boston Marathon opens today! Go to www.bostonmarathon.org to register.

From the 2009-10 racing seasons I know we have a few newly qualified marathoners: Amber, Bryan, Rowena, Beccca, (let me know if I'm missing anyone) and I'm sure we'll have some more to add to the list after MCM.

Create Your Own Marathon Pace Bracelet

If you are like me and don't have a spiffy Garmin to keep track of your pace, nor do you want to have to do all the math during the race in order to figure out if you're on pace to run your goal time, you can create your own pace bracelet! And it's free. Just go here.

Type in your goal time, and it will spit out a nifty PDF file with your marathon pace bracelet-- print itout & laminate using clear packing tape, and you have your own customized, waterproof (for the most part) pace bracelet. Old-school, but it gets the job done.

(Screen shot of the one I just made for this weekend is at the left)

Ryan Hall won't be running Chicago

So I'm a bit slow on getting this news (it broke about a week ago), but Ryan Hall has withdrawn from the Chicago Marathon. Apparently he'll still be in Chicago for the weekend though, supporting his charities. News Article here

Event: Evening of Free Running Stories to Inspire

Photo from Runner's World 'Rave Run'

Came across this event and thought it might interest many in GRC:

"An invitation is being extended to runners of all abilities and interest for an evening of inspiring stories which will inspire you to achieve your running fitness goals. The callenges of running may not be obvious until you lace up your shoes. What are the influences in your life that shape your running schedule and other priorities? Do you have to set a "Personal Record" in every race? Is it important to listen to your body when you run?

The evening of conversation will be held at The North Face Store, 3333 M Street, NW (202-298-5510) The session will be on Wednesday, September 8th, 6:30-8:30 p.m." Speakers will include: Michael Wardian, Elyse Braner, Alisa Harvey, and George Banker. You can find the speaker bios and more information on the event HERE. (Washington Running Report)

And since it's this coming Wednesday from 6:30-8:30, you can still make it to the GRC Happy Hour after the event!

From pro to beginner...

I thought some people might be interested in this article about Justin Gimelstob's efforts to run his first marathon. Interesting to see how a world-class athlete in one sport can struggle in another.

Army 10 Miler

Hi guys,

One of my friends from Houston has a bib for the Army 10 miler and isn't going to be able to come up and run the race. I wanted to check and see if anyone wants the bib. The race is on October 24th so if you think you'd be interested in running it let me know.

Happy running!

Let's Do the Ten-Miler Again!

For those interested in extra mileage for the Tuesday and Thursday runs. I will be trekking out for 10 instead of the classic 6. The only other difference is an earlier start time 6:25-6:40 is a must. Leave a post or text me if you are going for the 10. I expect to be at the store by 6:20. See you there!

9 Miles for Thursday anyone?

Hi All, Once again my training plan is calling for a 9 miler tomorrow (Thursday), so I'm hoping that there are others that would like to join me...already had a few takers at the happy hour tonight, but leave a comment if you'd like to join in so we know to expect you! We'll leave the store a bit early~ at 6:40 from the store. See you tomorrow!

Not quite as creative as Degas here with the cartoons, especially seeing as how it's after the happy hour and I'm looking forward to sleep. Will try harder next time.

Battle Sites in the UK & US

Hi all, apologies if this all goes terribly wrong but it's my first post. I just thought I'd post this link because the Spartan Race comprises of a set of races that take place over here in jolly ol' England as well as the Big US of A (Boston in August and LA in December). I intend to participate in the Cambridge (UK) race next month and, from the looks of it, the course is pretty hardcore! The first three men and women that make it through each race get free entry to the Spartan Race World Championships "THE DEATH RACE" http://www.youmaydie.com/ in Pittsfield, Vermont! Surely thats a big enough incentive?!?!

10-Miler Tuesday Run...

Just as a reminder, for those trying to keep their mileage up or are otherwise interested in a longer run, I will be running 10 instead of the normal 6 tonight, traffic permitting. Expect to leave the store @ 6:30-6:40pm. See you there!

Ultimate Frisbee

Hey gang!

A week or two back at a glorious HH, discussion came up about putting together a GRC ultimate frisbee team to play at the lowest rings of experience for another excuse to run around on a Saturday. This email is to tell ya’ll this is still happening and that we’re starting to mobilize. Since the League website is still a bit slow to update, I’m putting together a list of emails to add to a Google group to starting organizing interested people for a roster / email distro.

This is totally open to anyone in the running club or your friends – so please forward this email at will. If you’re interested just send me an email and I’ll add ya.

Also, this weekend we’re getting together to throw and meet the other teammates at the Washington Monument around 11:00am. If you’ve never played ultimate in a “competitive” setting (reminder: this team is for fun, not for competition so we don’t care at all about our record) this might be good so we can start telling you some basic rules and throwing tips. And if you already know the game, then come anyways so we can hang and throw.

Location: Washington Monument
Time: 11:00am
Look for: Clay and a frisbee

Cheers for now,

Clay.

Parks Half-Marathon, September 12th

For those of you running Chicago or Marine Corps, the Parks Half Marathon falls at the perfect time to get your race legs ready (and still have time to taper of course), and for those of you looking for a half-marathon this fall, this one's right in our backyard! What's better- it's the cheapest half around this season at only $45.

The course is point-to-point, starting near the Rockville Metro Stop, through Rock Creek Park, and finishing in downtown Bethesda. For more information, take a look at the website:
http://www.parkshalfmarathon.com/

Let me know if you plan on running it so we can all meet up as a group before/after the race :)

And if you're looking for a half over labor day weekend (week before Parks), complete with beach and weekend vacay~ Tara & Meghan are running Virginia Beach, with Mike looking to get a group together for a beach house that weekend. Take a look at Mike's post about their plans at his post here
